Alberta Wetland Policy

Alberta’s wetlands are highly diverse and productive ecosystems that provide various benefits. Wetlands are of strong importance to the province’s landscape. Our practice in this field can ensure that projects are completed successfully, as we have a clear understanding of all environmental legislation.

What is Alberta Wetland Policy?

The Alberta Wetland Policy provides tools and a strategic foundation necessary to make educated and informed management decisions with regards to minimizing the damage done to wetlands. The purpose is to conserve, restore, and protect Alberta’s wetlands that provide benefit to Albertans, the environment, economy, and society. According to the Alberta Wetland Policy, the onus is on the applicant to ensure no impact or damage results from any development project activity.

Wetlands protect water quality, water storage, and infiltration. This results in healthy biodiversity — promoting a strong environment for wildlife, plants, and fish.

Any activity or development that affects Alberta’s wetlands will require an application under the Alberta Water Act.

  • Healthy, sustainable aquatic ecosystems.
