Alberta Wetland Policy

Alberta’s wetlands are highly diverse, productive ecosystems that provide various benefits and are of strong importance to the province’s landscape. Our experience in this field can ensure that projects are completed successfully, as we have a clear understanding of environmental legislation.

Wetlands protect water quality, water storage, and infiltration. This results in healthy biodiversity — promoting a strong environment for wildlife, plants, and fish.

Any activity or development that affects Alberta’s wetlands will require an application under the Alberta Water Act.

What is Alberta Wetland Policy?

The Alberta Wetland Policy provides the tools and a strategic foundation necessary to  make educated, informed management decisions with regards to minimizing the  damage done to wetlands – to conserve, restore, and protect Alberta’s wetlands that  provide benefit to Albertans, the environment, economy and society as a whole.  According to the Alberta Wetland Policy, the onus is on the applicant to ensure no  impact or damage results from any development project activity.

  • Species at risk assessments
  • Wildlife sweeps
  • Breeding
  • Migratory bird surveys
  • Amphibian Surveys

The goal of the Alberta Wetland Policy is to conserve, restore, protect, and manage the province’s wetlands to support the benefits they provide. To accomplish this goal, the  policy focuses on the following outcomes:

  • Safe, secure drinking water for Albertans.
  • Healthy, sustainable aquatic ecosystems.
  • Reliable and quality water for a sustainable economy.
  • Reducing the negative impact on Alberta’s wetlands as much as possible during the planning, design, construction, and operational phases of development and managing activities that may damage wetlands.
